Updating VirtualBox on Ubuntu 11.10

I had VirtualBox 4.1.4 running on my Ubuntu 11.10 machine and today I wanted to update it to the current version 4.1.6. This didn’t exactly work as I expected, so I decided to share my experience and describe how I proceeded with the update.

By the time I installed 4.1.4 I downloaded the .deb package from virtualbox.org and double-clicked it to install. Today I downloaded the .deb package for 4.1.6 and also double-clicked it but nothing happened. Well, the Software Center opened up but it didn’t do anything. Looking for “virtualbox” in the Software Center resulted in version 4.1.2 with status not installed. So I used the Debian Package Manager (dpkg) to uninstall the old version and install the new one.

# Search for virtualbox within the installed packages
dpkg -l "*virtualbox*"
# Remove the corresponding package
dpkg -r virtualbox-4.1
# Install the new package (has to be downloaded first)
dpkg -i virtualbox-4.1_4.1.6-74713~Ubuntu~oneiric_i386.deb

This worked fine for me. When I started VirtualBox afterwards all my machines were there. Desktop shortcuts and VBoxManage are also still working.
