Getting Access To Mac OS Without A Password

If you forgot your Mac’s admin password or you have to maintain a friend’s Mac who doesn’t remember his password, you can do the following to obtain administrative access.

  1. Power on your Mac
  2. Press and hold Command+S to enter Single User (Root) mode
  3. Mount your hard drive:
    mount -uaw /
  4. Determine where your hard drive has been mounted:
    mount
  5. Change to your hard drive, i.e.
    cd /dev/disk0s2
  6. Delete the following file:
    rm var/db/.AppleSetupDone
  7. Reboot your Mac:
    reboot

Once the Mac has rebooted, it will come up with the First-Time-Setup wizard which allows you to create a new administrator account. Existing accounts will be left as is.
