How To Enter A Product Key on Windows 8 / Server 2012

If you install a corporate version of Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 that uses Volume Licensing, you won’t be asked for a Product Key during installation. However, in order to activate Windows you need to enter your Product Key at some point after installation. It might happen that this is not possible because Windows doesn’t give you the option to enter it.

To enter your Product Key and run the activation, you normally would have to click the “View details in Windows Activation” link in the PC/Server info screen:

The activation wizard might abort with an error, though — not letting you enter or do anything at all. In this case you can do the following: Hit Winkey+R to bring up the Run-Window. Then enter slui.exe 3 to directly open the activation wizard window which allows you to enter your Key:

Once you entered your Key Windows will immediately activate if the internet connection works. If you don’t have a connection you can also use the phone activation which can be accessed by running slui.exe 4.
