Solving Windows Update Issues

If your Windows Update does not properly work anymore, it might help to delete the update cache which is located in “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution”. In order to delete this folder, you need to stop the “Windows Update” service first.

You can do this by using the GUI or by command-line. If you use the command-line, make sure to start it with administrative privileges. Then enter these three commands:

net stop wuauserv
rmdir C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution /q /s
net start wuauserv

Now Windows Update should work again. To start looking for updates using the command-line, type:

wuauclt.exe /detectnow
