Disable RDP Printer Redirection

If you use an RDP connection to administrate a Windows server, you might receive several “TerminalServices-Printers” Errors (ID 1111) in your System log each time you establish the connection, because RDP fails to redirect your local printers due to missing drivers. This is quite annoying and makes it more difficult to quickly check the log for “real” errors.

To prevent these errors, printer redirection can be disabled on the server. This can be done either with the Group Policy Editor (gpedit) or with the Registry Editor (regedit).

Group Policy Editor

  • Hit Winkey+R
  • Type “gpedit.msc”, then hit Enter
  • Open the following path: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Printer Redirection
  • Set “Do not allow client printer redirection” to Enabled

Registry Editor

  • Hit Winkey+R
  • Type “regedit”, then hit Enter
  • Open the following path:¬†HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft > Windows NT > Terminal Services
  • Create a new DWORD named “fDisableCpm” and set its value to 1
